First of all I believe this was a JV game. So just as the players are learning, so too are the coaches or they would be coaching Varsity. Alot of this comes to experience. Maybe they had and maybe they hadn't been in that situation before, and even so trial and error is what makes people better. If it happens on a continual basis then I think it deserves more attention, however the girls should do as their coaches ask during a game & to the best of their ability.
Stats are good for getting headlines, and drawing interest (getting on the map). In my limited experiences, it is then more about further review & fundamental testing and measurables like Speed, Arm Srength, Bat Speed, Coachability (ability to absorb instruction), maybe a few more things which signal ability to translate & compete in different settings, and upside.
