I always like to give as many teams with a good history a chance. I never understood why tournys would pick lets say....Wildcats.....then they admit wildcats gold, wildcats blue, wildcats silver, wildcats black, wildcats orange, wildcats light blue with a shade of pink...;) Like I said, it's often who you know.....heck...just put a color behind your team and see if that works ;&

I take it your team did not get in? Im sorry. If you think its about Who You Know at the Stingrays Showcase to get in then you are sadly mistaken.

Please explain why you don't understand.

Mark would most likely be referring the the 12u teams that got in. The Hawks 99 Kepple had a successful season last year winning most of their 10u tournaments and representing well at ASA nats. They are young and will again make their mark this year.

I have to agree to a point, it does seem that past accomplishments and name recognition trumps some teams more recent successes in some of the choices.

His team is a prime example, they were very successful last year as was ours, and neither was considered because the name hasnt been around for ages. When you have the amount of SW teams thats in compared to everywhere else, i see the where the "its who you know" accusation might arise.

If you dont believe that who you are "team name"/"reputation" doesnt matter then u must be blind. One example is the 16U Classics team that got in. Beckham is a good coach and has a good rep, but doesnt have near the team he had in the past. Also a few 15-U teams that got in over 16U teams, even from the same organization. So these
16U teams took there lumps at times last year as 15U, but 14U teams moving up, get it based on what they did at 14U.

Believe it or not, college coaches in and around Ohio know those orgs with the history and name recognition. That's why they come and that's how a Showcase tourney like Stingrays gets them to come. Period!

Looking at the teams. I have no issues very solid field. I believe the team that I use to coach has played many of the 16u teams and i do know most all of them. Yes they have some 15u teams, but those teams are very very good, Good list. I feel bad that our new team did not get in but will feel better when we play some of those teams. WE HAVE A LOT TO PROVE and believe we will. EMR94.

Hi soccormom, welcome back. I see that you have been away from this thread for a while, so I thought I would circle back and see if you wanted to explain a few things that were posted a few pages ago. I won't burden this page by coppying both of my responses to you, but the one below certainly needs to be addressed

My other issues has always been its based on what you did last year. With the turnover of teams today, many teams that were great last year, may not be quite as good this year. Especially at the 16 and 18U level, where players have left many of the "established" and well known teams for Gold Teams, both here and in Chicago. Though a short resume', The Fall is all you have to base teams on for this year. I know some players couldnt play, but it is a better measure then last summer.

MY COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS RELATED TO YOU POST

soccormom - the more I think about your comment the more I want to know more about your claim. Again having been fairly knowledgable about this event over the years I find it interesting that someone that "claims" to be have been involved in the selection process doesn't think it is a consuming process, because it is. What was interesting to me is that you signed up on this system in 2009 and have 5 posts to date - 2 of which are on this topic (now 6 and 3). Not that I am a skeptic or anything, but something doesn't sound right here. Because everyone here values your opinion why don't you tell us what year you sat on the selection committee. Even better why don't you tell us who you are. You can PM me if you prefer. The funny thing is that while many women are involved in making this tournament a special one - there has only been one female that has sat on the selection committee, and she is a current coach. Either I am misinterpreting your nickname or it is meant to be misleading. The one thing I like about this site is that it allows for the free and easy exchange of information. What I dislike about sites like this is that they allow people to make comments without being held accountable.

The "hit and run" approach works well in game situations - not on message boards. There are others on this thread that have issues with things, but they aren't hiding. That is why people listen to THEM!!

While having had the opportunity to be a part of the tournament the last few years, while not in the selection process, I am sure it is never easy for them to pick or choose who gets into the field. Even after expanding it last year, they still will never gain everyone's satisfaction due to the fact that there will be rejection communications sent as you can't fit everyone. Many of the said organizations regularly help get their girls placed at the college level as girls on their teams come and go. So they are still a viable entity to the college coaches, or they wouldn't show for the event.

Regardless, it is bar none still one of the best events for the girls in the Midwest.

IMHO this tournament has grown into such a large DEAL many teams are faced with disappointment here in Ohio. Half the field is from other states. I think its quite an accomplishment that the tournament has reached such a status. It is also entertaining reading post from (adults) who act like a 5 year old because they were turned away. Just like mommy said No. lol

I think what people are saying is that if you only look at the history behind an org. then heck, it makes it pretty easy. In that case, every Pitt. Spirit team and every Pitt. Power team will get in. That means the blue team, the red team, the gold team etc. But, lets say I get an app. from lets say Vandalia Vikings. Nobody ever heard of them but they won 4 tournys at showcase events, and went 46-5 on the season. I'm thinkin, bring that team in. When you look at the Power red team, ya, they were good, but went 30-20 and only won one tourny. They got in because of their name. Then I look even deeper and find out that the Vikings were 2-0 against that same power team. As people are saying that Ohio tournys are bringing in more out of state teams, thats true. But the cause/effect of that is that now, many Ohio teams are looking to out of state tournys away from Ohio. If you want to get noticed by a college coach in my opinion, you need to attend that college's camp!! If you have something they want, in those 3+ hours youre there, they will notice. Anyways, good luck to all the teams in the tourny, the first and most important fact of all is play for love of the game. Even if you are playing in the sandlot in your neighborhood, the game is what is pure.

Please explain why you don't understand.

Pretty simple - he thinks some teams that were left out were better than some that are in...

From the 18u teams that I am familiar the 10 I thought were locks are all in and the 6 I thought had no business are out. I have not seen every team play, but I would say 8 or 9 of those that were left out could play with anyone. With only 32 making it some good teams are left out (including my dd's team)...they had to make some choices so obviously some people are unhappy. That is just the way it is.

This is an excellent point, and very good advice, in my opinion.

After reading all the replies. This must be the best tournament of the year. Seems like everyone in Ohio and other places want in. Alot of resentment, and jealousy. This is quite a complement to the tournament. All involved should be proud that they are getting this much attention. Both positive and negative. I am sure it is a difficult decision each year. As I understand all have to submit an application along with a resume. Anyone could over state their accomplishments. I can only imagine what it is like to have to make those choices.
Hat's of to those running this tournament, and good luck to all who were accepted.

I understand that Rudy and the other coaches want teams from out of state. But I have heard alot of people on here complain about players going out of state to get better exposure. Couldnt Stingrays, Lasers, GAPSS, etc. help this along by promoting OHIO softball, and giving preference to OHIO teams or am I being too short sighted here. Does bringing in teams from PA, IN, that stinky place up North, etc. bring in more college coaches. All of these tournaments are College Exposure Tournaments, I just think they should help promote OHIO players. Daughter has played in all of these tournaments and was part of this great organization (Stingrays).

Just asking a question...

If it was me running it, I guess I would want to bring in the best teams/players I could regardless of what state they're from. I wouldn't think a tournament of this prestige would need to bring in teams out of state just to say there are teams from all of these other states. Nor would I think that I had to bring in Ohio teams just because we are based in Ohio.
