just an FYI. There is an organization out there (relatively new one in Ohio) telling its players that they have been guaranteed a spot in this tournament.

I tried to explain to my co-worker (whose daughter plays on the 14u team) that this isn't how it works with this showcase.

And to be clear, this isn't a case where the Coach is saying they are "applying", this coach is telling parents that they have already been accepted, that he worked out a deal. I HIGHLY doubt that the Stingrays did this and think it is wrong that there are coaches out there telling their parents this load of ****!

You are correct mckenna7. You have to submit your schedule and some other things to be considered for this tourney. It is not easy getting into with all the great teams applying. No one is automatically in that I know of, except the Stingrays themselves.

Trust me nobody has a gurantee into this tournament except the Stingays. I know some of the board and some years my team has gotten in and some years my teams didnt. Its very tough.

That's Jim for you. This is a compilation of girls from the former Tidalwaves club. Basically Keystone HS's team. He is a piece of work!

How do you know anything about this? Was it because someone from your org came to one of our tryouts and made offers to kids and parents while tryouts were going on?! Now that is a piece of work!

What you guys don't know is that some of us parents asked them to apply to stingrays. We were never told we were in. Also these teams are not just Keystone girls so I wish people would get the facts straight before they bash. I will also say that just because they have a new name does not mean that these girls have no history or won't compete. This is not some rec team deciding to play travel ball so don't make it sound that way. Obviously some will fair better than others but I will tell you there will be multiple teams/ages that will be tough games for anyone. So good luck to all and we do hope to see you in Columbus!

I have no idea what you mean by the tryouts comment...but I know a few girls from our organization chose to play for this organization for a variety of reasons - some being that they play/will play for Keystone and wish to compete with their HS teammates (which is great for HS team building!). I have no hard feelings, I didn't personally lose any of my players.

But I have personally dealt with Jim Piazza in the past in different ways and I've never been a fan. He is a great coach, don't get me wrong! He gets it done on the field! But not very personable, in my opinion. Just saying I'm not surprised that something he may have said (whether he actually did or not) may have been construed in this way. He's a smooth talker.

And I added the comment about it being the former Tidalwaves club to state that they aren't a 'new' organization - but a renamed former (and powerful, annually successful) club with quite a few Keystone girls.

Good luck in your application process, maybe we'll see you down there

Interesting application pool so far, I like the International flavor in the 18's.

I wouldn't mind checking out some of those games since they are National teams. As a side note, Dd played in the Colorado Freedom tournament (14s) this year and a team from Australia was there- the Australian team lost every game and only scored 1 run all week.

I was thinking about this international flavor thing. Isn't this tournament about college showcasing first? If so, do we as Ohioans want foreigners coming in and taking our spots for a chance at showcasing in front of schools we are wanting to notice us? I know that there has always been a push to bring the most talent in, but I read on OFC all the time the griping about California girls getting recruited by Ohio State, and why can't Ohio schools pick Ohio players... Now we are going to be losing our opportunities to foreigners? Why, just so someone can talk up the tournament that "WE ARE WORLD WIDE"?

I hope the selection committee takes this into consideration when choosing the teams to participate.

and no, my team is not applying, so there is no sour grapes to comment on.

I don't think most youth international teams are all that threatening. They are leaps and bounds behind US youth fastpitch athletes - I'd be surprised to see some get in to Stingrays. The lack of European interest in fastpitch is a huge reason why softball was eliminated from the Olympics....

Anyone who's competed in, or is familiar with, the Queen of Diamonds World Cup trip to the Netherlands knows that the US teams compete against European teams with players in their mid-twenties and thirties who are far lacking in the skill sets shown by the US athletes...partially because they just don't offer competitive sports for young athletes and many don't get into it until after their HS years.

It's great Stingrays is getting international attention - but I agree - I wouldn't want them taking too many spots at the tournament, knowing they're WAY behind their US counterparts on the softball field...

AND that's why the highest place finish ever in the CUP by a U.S. team has been 3rd.;&

Again - they don't play youth teams over there. The women they play are in their mid-twenties & early-to-mid-thirties! I'm not saying they are all bad - but they don't have strong youth programs.
