Rudy, do you know whether the NFCA will have a camp in 2011 as they did in 2010? Thanks.

Carol, the NFCA process (site selection and contracts) is something that won't happen until later in September. So at this point, there isn't anything we can say other than there is a process we have to go through again.

A couple of updates concerning the tournament:

First, there will be an NFCA administered recruiting camp on Thursday July 7, 2011 at the Lou Berliner Athletic Complex, 325 Greenlawn Avenue, Columbus, OH 43223 on fields #10, #11, #12 and #13. Parking for the day will be free. For more details, go to our camp web page at http://11tourney.stingraysfastpitch.com/content/nfca-recruiting-camp

Secondly, we will have a 23U (or 18U & over) bracket at Stingrays this year. This portion of the tournament will be held at the Pickerington North Softball Complex, 7800 Refugee Road, Pickerington, OH 43147-7987 on Saturday July 9 and Sunday July 10, 2011. A registration form will be posted on our web site in the near future. We would be looking to have a minimum of (8) teams in this age group.

Parents and coaches, we all know how difficult and sometimes confusing the recruiting process can be. There often appears to be so many questions with very few answers. To help you through this process, the Ohio Stingrays have teamed up with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association to bring you a FREE recruiting seminar at this year’s Ohio Stingray’s tournament.

The NFCA’s senior director of events, Hildred Deese, will be giving a 45-minute informative talk about the recruiting process, with plenty of time to answer your individual questions. The seminar will occur twice during the first day of the tournament, July 8, once at 10:30 a.m. and then again at noon. Before joining the NFCA, Deese spent 17 years as a NCAA Division I head coach and is someone with extensive knowledge of what college coaches want to see and what athletes need to provide.

Other tournaments charge as much as $100 for this type of seminar, but the NFCA is offering this one absolutely for free. There is no pre-registration required and an abundance of topics will be discussed. Some of the areas that Deese will speak on are listed below, but please feel free to bring your own questions so that you can take full advantage of this great opportunity.

1. How do I work within the recruiting rules to help my daughter gain collegiate softball exposure?

2. When should I start focusing on the potential of an athletic scholarship? Is it too late to start now?

3. When should I send the softball video and the resume?

4. When can I receive calls and emails from college coaches?

5. When can I contact (face to face or by phone) college coaches?

6. What is a verbal commitment and how do they work?

7. When is the official scholarship-signing period for a softball athlete?

8. What are the softball governing bodies that create the softball rules for colleges and junior colleges across the country? How do they differ?

9. How many scholarships are available each year for junior colleges and for NCAA institutions? What is my competition for these scholarships?

10. What is an official and unofficial visit, when can they be taken and how many are allowed?

11. What are the pros and cons of using a recruiting service?

12. When should I take the ACT and/or SAT tests? What GPA do I need to be declared NCAA eligible to play as a college freshman?

13. What information should potential athletes send to college coaches?

14. Are scholarships guaranteed for a 4-year period? Can a scholarship be taken away after the completion of the first year in college?

Note: Athletes may attend, but may find that this seminar is more appropriate for parents/coaches.

Please visit the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) tent prominently located at Fred Beekman Park on July 8. Meet with the NFCA folks individually or join them for the 10:30 or noon seminar.

Since my "sneak-back" day is devoted to the NFCA, I'll chime in that Hildred Deese is the best! So glad to see the NFCA forming this relationship with the Stingrays tournament. It's a tribute to both organizations.

The Ohio Stingrays would like to thank all teams that have sent in applications for the 2011 tournament. In terms of a time line, the full tournament committee will meet tomorrow evening. Friday will be kind of a grace day for us in the event any further discussion needs to take place. Playing status notifications should be out to all teams by late Sunday evening. Again, thanks to all.

wow, they will be taking less than half that applied for 16"s. That one is going to be tuff to decide, but should be some great competition come July though!

Crush, every age group is tuff to decide. There are so many talented teams to consider. After last night I have a great appreciation for what the NCAA baskeball Committee must go through.

Oh yes ray99 you guys have hard decisions all the way around. No matter what, you will never please everyone. It is a compliment, to the tournament in a way, that you have to make these hard choices each year.

I brought up the 16's cause not even half of those who applied will make it in.. that's tough!
