Hate to keep beating the horse but ....

Was part of a very unfortunate event in my early bracket play game today . My biggest strongest power hitter was up and was a facing a young pitcher not wearing a mask and hit a line shot directly off her forehead area . The good news is the girl got good medical reports at last report . But what should be a fun day at the park turned into a nightmare really quick. An ambulance called , blood spilled , terrified kids , parents and coaches as well. I write this just to implore ALL involved in the game to talk to pitchers parents about wearing the mask . I hope and pray I'm NEVER EVER part of a situation like that again . I'm kinda choked up just thinking about it . So readers , if you can politely encourage a NON mask wearing pitcher to mask up I'd appreciate it . I promise no one wants to part of a situation like today . thanks . with respect and another prayer for the young girl. MD

I pray the girl is ok ! I as a coach of a 13u team do not leave this decision up to the parents , if you don't want to wear a mask you do not pitch for my team !

It's should be a rule period. End of story. Just like no metal spikes until 14u

Heres an idea. As a coach, carry and extra facemask in your bag and offer it for use to any pitcher 3rd or first not wearing one. At the younger ages, many girls are moving from rec and may not have used them there. Or the family simply may not be able to afford all the equipment. I think Boombah now has masks in multiple colors for about $25. Just and idea.

Happened in our first game on Sunday also. Our #4 hitter lined one off the pitchers forehead. Fortunately for the pitcher she was wearing a mask. Hit so hard it ricocheted up into the air and the 3rd baseman had to turn and run back toward left and caught it for an out. Pitcher took a minute to regain composure and finished the game. No mask, at a minimum, she is in the hospital.

My DD wears a mask and took a line drive to the chest yesterday. Luckily it didn't impact on her heart and she is fine, but on top of wearing a mask she'll be wearing a chest protector from now on too. I 100% agree with you. Mask should be a rule, not an option.

I just don't get no masking up. All parents should require their child to use a mask in the circle or on the corners imo.

I will never allow a pitcher to pitch for me without a mask, period. Any coach, parent, TD, adult, that allows it is responsible for what happens. Once they are 18, then it is what it is.

Hell, we recently had our left fielder take a shot off of her head that took her mask off her head. Also my older daughter had several outfield shots bounce off hers.

That's a very good idea. Coaches should at least push players to try masks in practice so they can get a sense of playing with them and which style(s) they prefer.

Before this season started, I gave my option to my DD to wear or not to wear. It wasn't until the thread a couple months ago with that girl and the shiner who just stopped wearing it. Told DD if Nunley and Inglesbe can wear one, so can you. She was not happy with me, but understood.

I found myself rooting for UK just because Nunley wears a mask. Apparently she took one off the face playing SS and has worn one ever since. I really wish more college players would wear them, because if it starts there, it will almost certainly trickle down...

I am working the other direction to get the idea to trickle up (difficult because of gravity). Our organization requires that all players (position does not matter) at 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U wear a defensive mask. I am hopeful that many of those players will continue the practice when they move to 16U and 18U. [Maybe the OHSAA and ASA, NSA and some other organizations will make it a rule.

My daughter's req ball 8u team is finding out the hard way really fast. Last few games girls have taken hits to the face, luckily nothing severe or fast yet. The next game a couple more girls had a mask. The start of the season my daughter was the only girl to wear one.

Playing against the Ohio Emeralds at the Wildcat Pride the other week, one of our pitchers took this line drive shot! You can hear the ball hitting her collarbone!

Ive seen girls at ss take line drives off the mask at 12 u, things really need to change when it comes to the mask,, and not jus the pitcher and the corners

The irony of the shot...#10 emeralds took that same shot pitching in the spanodome. Broke her collarbone. All of the girls in our infield wear protective gear. Most heartguards also.

Its just unreal to me that now days with all of the web sites and forums like this one that people are not educated on this very topic. My daughter just played against a local rec team and NONE OF THEM HAD MASKS. It was 10 u and my daughter hit one off the pitchers knee. I am happy it didn't hit her in the face and the kind of power my daughter has you just don't see at the 10 u level often so it was a total shock to the pitcher, she had zero chance.... I approached the coach and her answer to my question of WHY DONT YOU ATLEAST HAVE YOUR PITCHER IN A MASK WAS...."We don't think its pretty enough" WOW! This organization is the same organization that many have complained about in the past. So for the rest of the game I had my daughter bunting and slapping, I just didn't feel like it was the responsible thing to just say, " Its their own fault if they get hurt" They players were not real good and situations like this people really need to use that space between their ears. I have since removed my daughter from the team as I have seen other teams not wearing masks as well. SIMPLY STUPID IS THE ONLY WAY I CAN EXPLAIN IT! Get those masks in THE RULE BOOK PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Manitou I wouldn't call it beating a dead horse I would call it common sense and a good effort on your part to help educate people on the possible hazards of not being protected with these hot bats now days. DONT STOP!
