Hate to keep beating the horse but ....

Opinions on this subject have changed a lot over the years I have read and occasionally posted on this site. During that time the number of travel ball teams has increased tremendously and the technology in bat manufacture has advanced resulting in 12Us and, I think I read a tread on OFC of even 10Us hitting over fences HRs so between more pop in the bats and some players not ready to face much better skilled players I totally understand parents and coaches wanting face masks on players. I hope the mask or no mask question doesn't get resolved by the various alphabet orgs making it mandatory. I'd like to see some personal choice left to individuals.

go4 ... get what you're saying but unfortunately what that means is that some parents will make poor choices and kids will get hurt as a result ... in my opinion, the alphabets need to step forward ...

Absolutely could not agree more with this statement. We're talking kids here, no adults.
Lifechanging choices should not be left up to 12 yr old and teens.

Saw a 12U team today that had every player, every position, wearing a mask. Kind of seemed like overkill, but my position is always that any player is free to wear any piece of protective equipment they choose.

This team was batting. One of their batters smoked a foul ball, it went straight through the dugout opening and smashed one of their own players right in the mouth.

Maybe we need masks in the dugout too.

Umpires occasionally make players get out of the doorway. Which sanction(s) have rules regarding it?

These kids were sitting on the bench, exactly where they should be.

I'm not aware of any special rules other than the players must be "in the dugout".

You can get hurt running up and down stairs or running on a pool deck, maybe we should remove all stairs and pools. It's up to parents to be responsible, not ASA or any other sanctioning body to police this.

It comes down to how much risk is so unreasonable that sanctioning bodies are going to take it out of the hands of parents. I think everyone would agree that wearing a batting helmet eliminates a risk of serious injury and that getting hit by a pitch in the head is not too uncommon, and therefore it has to be mandated. But with face masks on defense, there is risk of serious injury to the pitcher and corners, but it is extremely uncommon. Is the combination of the potential of serious injury and likelihood of it happening enough to mandate masks? I'd say no, but I wouldn't argue too much against making it mandatory for pitchers.

Maybe we should just stop playing the game completely so NOBODY gets hurt. Maybe we should take a look at these overpriced overloaded cheater bats that a 10 year old can use to hit a ball 200 feet because of a large group of people complaining and whining that there isn't enough offense in the game. Maybe we should put the rubber back to 40 feet (but can't do that cause little suzie pitcher might start dominating to many games). Maybe instead of putting so much emphasis on facemasks (which I feel pitchers probably should wear but it is a choice) we put some emphasis on teaching these pitchers not to throw darn ball down the middle of the plate. I go to a 12u tournament to watch a friends daughters team play and the entire 9 players on the field are in facemasks....are you kidding me????

I can't believe that there is this much concern over kids wearing a mask. why is it such a problem for parents to have their DD wear one? yes you can get hurt doing anything in life, but even if a player wears one in the o.f. why should it bother anyone?if it makes her feel more comfortable as a player and removes hesitation in playing her position more power to her. i require my DD to wear the mask in the circle and at first. she has no problem with that. if wearing that mask saves one trip to the E.R. for even a minor injury, it has served it's purpose and saved my daughter from injury. don't understand why all parents wouldn't look at it this way. no matter how good your DD is, a liner from 43 ft or so is much quicker than any player......
i'd much rather pay for braces to enhance her smile than dental implants because her teeth were shattered.....

Fpitchdad ... you and I both have/had DD's who pitched at the college level. I have no doubt that yours, like mine, knows there's a lot of reasons to avoid throwing the ball down the middle of the plate, including that the likelihood of getting a ball smashed back at you increases greatly. With that being said, you know as well as I do that sometimes the ball doesn't always go where a pitcher wants it to go, especially with less experienced pitchers. We also both know that some umpire strike zones are the size of postage stamps and that sometimes pitchers don't have much choice. I pretty much saw my daughter pitch every game she ever pitched, and I would estimate she had about a dozen balls over the years that might have hit her in the head had she not caught or deflected them, and about half of them were times when the strike zone was miniscule. She probably pitched about 2000 innings over the years, and so just having a dozen back her isn't very many, right? But had just one of those balls hit her in the head, it would have been both traumatizing to both her and me. She grew up in the era of no facemasks, but I know she tells all of her pitching students today to wear them, and when she and I coach together, I know she insists both the pitchers and corners wear them. Because of the high threat of a bunt in the fastpitch game and that coaches have to ask the corners play as close in as 20-25 feet, they should be wearing them too.

I know there are a lot of people out there who thinkk it should be a choice, and should not be mandated by the various organizations. And I'm absolutely fine with this at the college level, where the players are adults. But I strongly believe they should be mandated by all sanctioning organizations and rec leagues for youth players because there are many parents out there that are ignorant of the danger.

I hate it when people start going all extreme about outlawing the game altogether, wearing suits of armor, etc. That just doesn't add any credibility to their argument.

The video posted as proof that men wear catcher gear in the field showed only 1 pitcher...I just mentioned I had never seen it...I didn't deny such a thing existed...but you are right, I probably haven't seen much and I don't know much, especially about fastpitch....but I am scratching my head if you all are advocating girls wearing catcher gear while playing in the field...!
Ok Im just writing your opinion off as CLUELESS....Which enforces my point even further..One pitcher? One pitcher NOT WEARING A MASK is closer to the truth in the mens game at the higher levels! I don't see one post stating that girls should wear catchers equipment? Can you provide that post because I missed it!
