Some coaches are so bad you just feel sorry 4-em

In a high school game today:

The visiting coach was the only adult travelling with the team. He announced to his squad that there would be no one coaching first base so they needed to look at him down at third for everything. (When we were in little league, whoever made the last out the previous inning or the 9 hitter to start the game would coach first. This guy had two subs on the bench doing nothing, too. And there were several dads there, all capable).

His team scored 8 runs in the first inning, and except for a couple of baserunning errors (no first base coach), they might STILL be batting.

After three innings, the score was 21 to 1. In the top of the fourth, a girl who already had five hits in the game was given the TAKE sign on a 3-0 pitch! It was right down the middle. She walked on the pitch after that. The kid has five hits and you're ahead 21-1 and you can't give her the green light?

In the bottom of the fifth (last inning because of mercy rule) with his team ahead 27-1, the other team put runners at first and third with one out. This is when the most pathetic thing happened. Why the other coach would send the runner from first down 26 runs, I can't imagine-- but he did. Why the winning coach would put on a play in preparation for such a ridiculous move, I can't imagine either-- but he did. The play? Throw to THIRD hoping to catch the runner there napping!

In that spot, the coach shouldn't say anything. The catcher should just know that if the other side is dumb enough to try to steal down 27-1 with one out in the last inning, she should just gun down the runner at second. And she was jogging down there, too! If the coaches don't know what they don't know-- how can the players know what they don't know? It's really sad.

Ok I will bite on this.....
What are you talking about.....
first how do you know is the Dads were cappable... :-?Second if they scored 8 runs in first inning the 2 subs should have been cheering there team... ;)Third If my team is up 21 to 1 after 3 innings we are swinging at all strikes but usally from the oppisite side or working on drag bunting not trying to hit a 3 and 0 count for a sixth hit :-? :-? fourth...when the score is 27 to 1 there is huge differance in talent so maybe both coaches were working on something for the future( I do not know I was not there) and Last what does your last sentence mean?????? That makes no sense to me at all.....

Re: Some coaches are so bad you just feel sorry 4-

Several things here, that I dont think you understand from the coaching stand point. First how bad can this coach be, his team won 27 to 1. Maybe his bench players were not able or trusted enough to coach first base. Second this is not little league or rec ball, and a parent can not fill in as a coach. There is back ground checks and insurance issues to deal with.
In the top of the fourth, a girl who already had five hits in the game was given the TAKE sign on a 3-0 pitch! ? It was right down the middle. ?She walked on the pitch after that. ?The kid has five hits and you're ahead 21-1 and you can't give her the green light? So did you want him to run up the score some more, that was the ethical thing to do. She did after all, already have 5 hits.

As for the play at third in the bottom of the 5th, you dont know the reason for his decision. Heres some thought for you; maybe the catcher has never had the chance to make this play in a game before and he wanted her to try it, Why not they were winning 27 to 1. If it works or the cacher gained trust in herself to make that play again, then maybe she'll do it in a game when they really need it.

HINDSITE IS ALWAYS 20/20, HAVING GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AS A PARENT IS REQUIRED. HAVING A COACH KNOW THE GAME BETTER THEN A SECOND GUESSING PARENT AFTER THE ?FACT IS PRICELESS

Trust me, these guys weren't smart enough to be "working" on something. As for the dads, they all know the game, all played ball. All would have been much better than no one.

The last sentence means what it says. The coaches don't know what they don't know. They think they know a lot, but they have no idea how much more there is to the game. The players think they know a lot, but there's so much they could learn if their coaches only knew more and shared it. It's sad. You watch kids who've reached first base failing to go half way on fly balls to medium deep right field and then getting forced out at second base after the right fielder drops the ball--- and you want to go to those kids and teach them how to run the bases--- but of course you can't talk to them-- and that's how they get to be 15, 16, 17 years old and have no idea that they don't know how to run the bases. And you think to yourself, there's no way this coach will not say something to her about her baserunning--teach her the right way to do it-- but he doesn't. He doesn't say a word. It's crazy.

How do you know if these coaches were not smart enough to work on something...did you know them personally......And maybe the coach that WON 27 to 1 knew he had the better team and wanted the girls to LEARN to run on there own and thats why he did not put a "DAD" out there... I sure hope you knew these coaches and are just not speculating as an observer....how do you know that the coach is not saying anything ..just becuase he is not YELLING and SCREAMING when they make a mistake does not mean he in not trying to correct them....

Here is a great idea, go coach. You must of missed the parents can not coach first base.I.E. NO INSURANCE, NO BACK GROUND CHECK. Second if my players cant run bases put can score 27 runs and hold the other teams to 1 run. Who cares

Re: Some coaches are so bad you just feel sorry 4-

1. I do coach.

2. I happened to be umpiring this particular game.

3. I know both coaches-- and they can't coach.

4. The team that lost the game hasn't been within 15 runs of a lead after 4 innings all year.

5. The team that won the game isn't very good. Just way better than the losing team.

6. Fundamentally, both teams are poor.

7. The coach calls that "throw to third" play almost every time there's a first and third situation and it never works. Never. The player running to second was a dead duck. In that spot you'd trade 5 runs for one out.

7. "Maybe the two subs couldn't be trusted to coach first base." LOL. If you can make a high school team (even a bad one) you can coach first base at least as well as the gym teacher with no softball or baseball background who usually stands there.

8. Background checks? LOL. What a world! What? You think a player's dad is going to sexually assault one of the other kids in front of a crowd of people during a ballgame? There's a better chance that one of them could be bi-polar or something and flip out. But background checks don't cover that. Not for parents or coaches. Seems to me we hear a lot about coaches (in spite of background checks) molesting young girls--- but I don't think I've ever heard of a player's dad coming out of the stands and doing it during a game. I could be wrong, I guess. LOL. Too much paranoia. Too little teaching. It's a mess.

TO COACH

Governor Ted Strickland signed House Bill 190 into law Wednesday, November 14. ?This bill goes into effect immediately

A) If non-certified, the individual must meet the requirements of rule 3301-20-01 of the Ohio Administrative Code.

(B) Whether certified or non-certified, the individual is competent to direct, supervise or coach a pupil-activity program as evidenced by:

The ability to work effectively with pupils as documented by recent successful experience as determined by the board of education.
Knowledge of the activity program as documented by:
(a) Successful completion of a college or university course on the direction, supervision, or coaching of such activity program, OR
(b) Successful experience as determined by the board of education in such activity program.

3. Knowledge of applicable rules and regulations established by the board of education.

(C) Whether certified or non-certified, the individual who supervises, directs, or coaches a pupil activity program which involved athletics, routine/regular physical activity, or health and safety considerations as determined by the local board of education shall hold and maintain a currently valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation training course certificate as determined by the employing board of education; and

Truth,

While I understand your point to your post and have seen it too the other side of that coin is at least these girls are active in something they want to do in HS. They arent just Hangin at the mall or finding other things that could lead to much more serious issues in life.

If it keeps a child out of harms way or keeps them focused on school then its good. Regardless of the coaches abilitiy to coach. I am guessing a large number of these coaches volunteer there time. I know one coach who does and another who ends up using the money the school gives him to get equipment for his team.

Fact is as much as we would like to think, softball is not a high priority at a lot of schools. In Ohio or in Texas where I live. I appreciate all of those people who volunteer their time to support youth sports at any level. I have volunteered to coach many sports and knew nothing about them when I started. Futbol and Wrestling to mention a couple. Got so involved with wrestling that I started a youth program down here in my town. One of the most satisfying accomplishments I ever took on and succeeded in, as many of those young men have grown up to become class individuals.

The other day I walked into my insurance company and was confronted with a young lady who I coached 10 years ago in a rec league. She was working there as an agent. She remembered me and had some very nice comments about her time I coached her. It was the first softball team I had coached as a head coach. I didnt know 1/10th of what I know now. It didnt matter. I was a positive influence in this young ladies life.

That is what really matters Truth.

Elliott.

Sorry, I was looking for the SOFTBALL forum. I didn't know I was logging into to the "we don't care if we don't teach the kids how to play ball-- we just want them to grow up to be nice people" forum. My mistake. Parma--- that whole law you copied did not say anything excluding a dad from coaching first base. There was nothing about a background check-- only something that said you have to be certified in CPR. I don't think the school is going to be sued by a parent whose kid collapses on field on the grounds that the volunteer first base coach didn't have a CPR certificate. LOL. But I could be wrong. Neither one of the teams involved in yesterday's game even had sunscreen in their first aid kits. The odds of someone suffering from severe sunburn were about 2-1. The odds of someone needing CPR were at least 15,000 to 1. You guys need to lighten up with the micro-managing of EVERYTHING that means NOTHING and start paying attention to the fact that your players don't know how to play the game. The problem, of course, is that the nothing part is what you're best at, and the teaching part is what you can't do.

Truth I guess you didnt get my point.

Fact is as much as we would like to think, softball is not a high priority at a lot of schools. In Ohio or in Texas where I live.

The only reason softball exist today in Ohio is that laws were passed to force schools to offer more sports programs for females. There was no such thing as softball for females when I graduated from HS in Ohio. The school districts themselves give the programs a feeble budget. So, unless you have a great booster club your not going to get much support in the terms of equipment and facilities to keep your team sharp year around.

Then there is the money given to the coach. For the amount of time and effort you have to put in to create a good program what incentive does a coach have to not only improve his/her team but continue to improve? Nobody is going to pay for clincs or travel expenses to go to them. It will probably cost you $100.00 now in gas just to drive from one end of Ohio to the other and back.

I would venture to say those coaches who do have successful programs have feeder select clubs coming into them. Some of the better coaches I would guess probably are select coaches too. There are probably a number of coaches who got called into a principles office and were told " Your our next softball coach" with little or no experience in the game. Because the STATE mandates that girls have to have equal opportunity. If I am a teacher and I get this message am I going to think "Oh this is an opportunity of a lifetime" or am I going to just go through the motions?

You figure it out.

Truth, so just what is it that YOU are trying to teach us here. ?!) Umpires don't deserve the respect that WE coaches stress is important during a game? ?2) That your teaching or making everyone on this sight aware that we can not coach? ?3) That both of the fore mentioned coaches can't coach with a score of 27 to whatever? ?If I understood correctly the 27 run guy was by himself and because he didn't get help he's a bad coach? ?Just what is your point?????????

If you are simply stating (in a weird way) that there are bad coaches out there, then yes that is true. ?Keep in mind there are bad UMPS too!!!! ?The majority of the masses that read and write on this forum are accomplished coaches and do know the game and do stay current with the changes (or at least try to). ?

I will agree to one perception that I thnk you're trying to make. ?The coaches that want to coach but not learn, well yes, you have to feel sorry for the players, not necessarily the coach when HE gets hammered. ?The coach that can't coach but wants to learn and tries to learn, then yes, feel sorry for THEM when they get hammered. ?

The thing that lights my fuse, are the people that who have acquired knowledge of something, try so hard to make others feel inferior or take pride in belittling others, especially those that are trying to increase their knowledge as are many of these people that are on this forum. ?These are the people worth defending and conversing with. ?

Know-it-alls hit a dimenshing return eventually. ?Especially when no one cares what they have to offer. ? ? ?
? ? ?

Briana: Do you say, "Oh, I guess you know everything! Should I bow down to you?" every time your parents try to teach you something? When you coach tells you to play in a little do you ignore him because, well, he's a big know-it-all? It's a cop out, Briana. That whole attitude is a disingenuous cop out. Learn something. It won't kill you.

643 DP. Don't judge coaches? Why not? Somebody should. There's a lot of scholarship money at stake. People's lives are at stake. It's not just a game. There's a rec league in your neighborhood. Go there soon. And why would I care if YOU respond to my posts? I'm not involved here to convert sandal-wearing rec-leaugers. I'm here to talk about the game-- what's right with it and what's wrong with it.
