Briana: Do you say, "Oh, I guess you know everything! ?Should I bow down to you?" ?every time your parents try to teach you something? ? When you coach tells you to play in a little do you ignore him because, well, he's a big know-it-all? ?It's a cop out, Briana. ?That whole attitude is a disingenuous cop out. ? Learn something. ?It won't kill you.

643 DP. ?Don't judge coaches? ?Why not? ?Somebody should. ?There's a lot of scholarship money at stake. ?People's lives are at stake. ?It's not just a game. ?There's a rec league in your neighborhood. ?Go there soon. ?And why would I care if YOU respond to my posts? ?I'm not involved here to convert sandal-wearing rec-leaugers. ?I'm here to talk about the game-- what's right with it and what's wrong with it. ?
I can not believe I am doing this but after drinkin my 12th coors lite I have to respond :-[ :-[
I did not say you could not judge coaches... just not when you are umping a game Your job is to call balls and strikes JMHO...What the heck do you mean "peoples lives are at stake" are you saying if a player does not recieve a scholarship to college for softball they are nobody, they may die??????.... come on ,how may girls that play fastpitch go on to play ball in college and how many of them girls play ball after college...it not like they are going to make MILLIONS OF $$$$$ playing after they graduate...ALL these ladies should be thinking about playing the game because it is a GAME and worry about getting into college on academics and not softball.........While you are teaching your kid to swing on a 3 and 0 count to get a sitxth hit in a 20 run blow out I will be teaching my kid that she is more likley to be sucssessful when she graduates with a 4.4 GPA and gets full ride to Boston U and then she can tell her friends in college what a great time she had playing the GAME of fastpitch......
BTW I do not wear sandles when I coach I wear purple croc`s :p :p :p :p

Truth, ? maybe everyone should just stop playing softball. ?I am confident Truth, one day you will enjoy life and stop being angry all the time. ?Make sure you watch all the college games today while we are at practice, so I can come back home, get on ofc, and find out how bad all the college coaches are. ?It sounds like the coach that had nobody at first may have made the right decision. ?He could have won by 50 runs if he had an additional coach. ?You seem savy with your softball smarts, but your a fricken HEADCASE!

Truth, since this is a softball forum and you like to discuss how bad all the coaches are I'd like to give you my take on coaching. If you coach long enough you can expect the following:

1. Someone will always know more than you.
2. You will always have times when you second guess yourself.
3. You will always have parents that think their dd should not bunt. (ever)
4. You will make mistakes and relive them over and over.
5. You will be blessed some years with star athletes.
6. You will have a player with all the athletic abilities and no heart.
7. You will have a player with very little athletic abilities and is all heart.
8. You will have players that have good work ethics.
9. You will have players that are just there because their freinds are.
10. etc. etc. etc.
11. You will have memories that last forever.

I'm not sure how to take you, I beleive you have knowledge that could be very helpful, but your abilities to communicate with people need some work! ?I always tell my kids " The older I get, the better I was". I think this might hold true for you!

gunners: I think your post was right on. Obviously, all of it was true. It doesn't, however, have anything to do with the fact that the two guys who were coaching those teams the other day (the point of the original post) were obviously unqualified and doing a great disservice to the kids on their teams by holding those positions. Athletic Directors: find qualified people to coach your teams. They exist. Find them and hire them. Universities all over the country are cranking out softball players with teaching degrees. Advertise. Don't just offer the middle school gym teacher the job for and extra $500.00.

I don't care how you take me. I don't need any more friends. They all want free hitting lessons for their daughters. Sorry, "the older I get, the better I was" doesn't apply to me. If you were good, you were good. You don't have to exaggerate.

^^^ This guy is the classic example of "through rose colored glasses" his DD is "Sally Superstar"...his words...not mine. Although, most likely a good ballplayer, he forced said DD to quit her elite travel team because she didn't bat third and play SS...lol. And him being the greatest coach since Sparky Anderson, started his own Daddy's team, but will never come clean on which team he's affiliated with because he doesn't wan't to be exposed as a fraud...LMAO!!! ?;D ;D ;D

You can't ignore him where we live unless you have ear plugs. Anyone that reads these threads and lives in the area knows exactly who he is. I won't say where but its E of North Royalton. He is not a coach, just one of those parents that yells at thier kids from the stands and complains about every coach that has ever coached them. His kids have talent but play under pressure. He knows the game but if he umped it was when a real umpire no showed and he volunteered to step in for the temporary spotlight. You people have him pegged. ;D

I feel your pain. I live in Southern Ohio so I don't have the displeasure of knowing who he is. We have a few of "those" down here too. It sad the pressure some parents put on their poor kids who are just trying to have fun playing a GAME! Kids...Game...parents just kick back and enjoy!

Re: Some coaches are so bad you just feel sorry 4-

After reading all of this, it reminded me of a life lesson.

I was an asst. coach and my daughter who is 14 now was about 9.
I was too hard on her, pushed her to much. Half way through the season the head coach and her husband had a heart to heart with me in a nice way.
Made me think.
What I thought was - wow I am a jerk, and if I continue this my daughter will hate sports.
They put me on the right path, made me a better coach and a better dad.

She still plays and loves softball.

quote from above "The only reason softball exist today in Ohio is that laws were passed to force schools to offer more sports programs for females. There was no such thing as softball for females when I graduated from HS in Ohio. "

Sounds like a slam on Ohio softball ... either an older person or from a different part of town than me. ?I'm no spring chicken and I remember softball at my school way before title 9

SBfan,

I do not recall softball ever being a sport for females in Ohio from 70 - 74. It was not a slam on Ohio softball. You have taken the comment I made out of context and twisted it to your interpretation. And yes that would make me an old timer. ;)
