Wednesday Fun...What is your #1 pet peeve in select softball?

I have to go with the funky on-deck swings. I'm making this a big point of emphasis this year. Muscle memory controls your swing in the box and if you are taking multiple swings on-deck that bear no relationship whatsoever to what you have been taught to be good mechanics, you are developing the wrong muscle memory. Some of our players have listened to my request and it does my heart good to see them taking deliberate strokes in the on-deck circle, strokes that accentuate particular stroke steps that the player is working on.

When you try to tell a girl why what she did was wrong and she says I know and looks at you like your stupid.

Bleacher coaches that try to communicate with players on field! I shrug off the ones that say things to their own kids - hoping they'll learn it is counterproductive, especially at tryouts and showcases. The ones that really get to me are the ones yelling where to throw the ball or how to run the bases because it makes it more difficult for the players to do what they're supposed to do.

SoCal Dad has a good point. They better hope that no college coaches are around when they are doing this, it is a big turn off. We have this same issue in high school , so not sure if its select only.

This is not my biggest pet peeve but it is one I am coming to grips with.

Once upon a time my daughters team stunk. Now they play very high level ball. And now I have a real hard time watching anything less. I have become a softball snob and I do not know if I can ever go back. I do not mind coaching the beginners. But I can only watch the best teams and players.

It has happened so fast that I struggle to believe we were ever that bad (we were for sure.......). I have talked to a few other parents and they say the same thing. Even the girls do not like it. My daughter says watching the B flight games are boring and it is tooo slow. No tempo to the game. When I remind her she was right there last year she rolls her eyes and laughs..........like it never happened.

Hopefully I will not evolve/regress? into only winning makes me happy. Right now I can enjoy a well played game whether we win or lose.

Had one dd say I know so much I finally banned her from using those words. Threatened to make her walk home if she did it again, I believe I did make her get out and walk a couple of houses one time. :D

Having 2 kids playing Travel and not being able to watch each game. It kills me! I guess I should just get used to it.

Girls who still do not slide when the play demands it.

This one definitely gets to me as well!

Had a situation this past year where I had a girl hit a homerun and almost got tagged out at home (half of a step) because she wouldn't slide. When she came off the field and I asked her if she heard both the third base coach (who happens to be her dad) and me yelling at her to get down she admitted, "yes". I asked her why she didn't slide and she told me, "because I don't like to slide". I told her that she almost lost her homerun because of it and then I had to walk away.

Ted and JoeA were talking generally about this topic of parent conduct at tournaments and Joe said something that Ted really took to heart: when Joe was recruiting for his college, if he could identify a parent with a particular player by virtue of the parent's comments or other conduct, that was a red flag. I'm fairly certain that Joe is not the first college coach to have adopted that formula. And every time I've asked a Division 1 coach in NFCA Coaches College courses whether he or she failed to make an offer to, or even cut, a player because of the parents, the answer has been yes.

Definitely happens in high school too, even though parents should stop by then. Our HS coach included it in rules that everyone signed, but didn't do anything about certain parents that did it regularly. One of the worst offenders was a guy that doesn't do it at travel games.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned daddyball...

In addition to the many posted here:

*An ump who will allow an opposing coach to make calls for him/her
*An ump whose strike zone is inconsistent through the game
*A catcher who won't throw her mask off on balls hit straight up
*Outfielders who run after fly balls with their glove over their head the entire time
*A younger daughter who refuses to play softball!

3 fielders calling out "I got it" at the same time only to have all three stop and the ball drops right in the middle.

Coaches who "micro-manage".

I heard a coach watching the opposing team's hitters warming up and turned to someone and said "Doesn't it look like they're all trying to pull the ball?"

I've seen coaches ask hitters after every at bat "Was that an inside (or outside) pitch?"

Susie in left field: "Move back 4 feet"

Etc...
