What else is there (besides Rec or Travel)?

My child is a decent (but young/new) player. She's in 12U now. I don't want a full-fledged travel team (local travel is fine, just not out of state), but I want more than "daddy ball" rec.

I would like a team with good coaches who will work with her to get her up to "par" to compete to her fullest potential. Is there some kind of cross between Rec and Travel where they are competitive, but still "open" to new-ish players at the 12U level?

We are in the Columbus area.

Thanks.

Look for a team that plays in the 270 league, usually 2 dble headers a week Tue/ Thur or Mon Wed nights. Sort of like GOYSL SOKKER

There is also Fall Ball By Big League on Sundays that will place kids on a team or also Mannino's Grand Slam in westerville that does fall Sundays as well and will place kids on teams to get a tatse of better quality.

My suggestion would be to go to the "Ohio Team Registry" section of the OFC and see what teams are close to you. Then Contact those teams and see if they are an "A" team or "B" team. You could also ask for a private try out. Not all travel/select teams travel out of state.

Hope this helps

I don't think that she's quite "skilled" enough for a tryout situation. She's a decent player, but has only done rec, and has had limited practice time, and even less one-on-one (except for with me). She has potential, but needs someone to bring that out - or at the least, a team that can "teach" her the fundamentals as they go.

I have looked at the team registry, as well. I have a few that I'm interested in, but it's difficult to tell where they play from each website. I-270 teams are ideal, though.

Yep - Our team has had a very nice experience without extensive travel. We play i270 league and at most have had to go about 40 minutes. We are playing four tournaments all of which are local. Olentangy, westerville, Berliner and New Albany. So you can get alot of games just not go far. I would prefer that any travel team go at least to one tournament that you need to stay overnight but alot of community teams dont. Try outs are usually late July and August so check out your local organizations.

Another suggestion is if your rec team is willing to put together a team to play on Sundays against other rec systems. Sort of like an All Star team. The team would play against other all star teams then go back to their regular teams during the week. Good way to keep some 'tweeners' in the system and still allow them to play against solid competition.

To make this work the team would have to be picked very early in the season. Make it separate from the actual All Star selection to keep things fair for that.
