When Softball gets Ungly

Was there any warnings or ejections in this contest?

Like most, as I read through the post I am shocked for acouple of reasons. 1. The play as it was described and 2. The lack of involvement from the players coach and umpires....

There are areas of disqualification and codes of conduct in just about every sanctioning body.
If as some posters have stated this was an incident where a player purposely injured another player and as another poster stated "stood over andtaunted a player" where were the umpires?
I am sure the Coach of the lady in question has had at least ACE training as well the as well as the umpires with training in order to help avoid these situations from happening.

If as it was described in several post was an ongoing issue with the player and started earlier in the game why be passive as a coach or umpire? Take action when needed and apply the training you have received.

Now in the coach or umpires defense,
Was the play a positioning issue by the SS/2B? Or, a bad slidingtechnique used by the runner or both...especially at 12U?
Seen it happen a lot.

I have also seen players ejected for un-sportsman like conduct in HS, USSSA and ASA events(mainly at the older ages 16/18).
The hook comes fast when the umpire believes the action was intentional.

If it was a two umpire crew no way this type of conduct should have gone un-noticed or unaddressed... and if the player had a history of this behavior prior to the contest the coach should have addressed it... before it escalated into a injury such as this.

This chain of events is just Sad....

I hope for a speedy recovery for the lady involved...

Yeah this should be Locked.....

I disagree, this topic shows how crazy some of us parents get with a game of softball. Majority handle our emotions in check, but there are few of us and I was guilty of it when DD was young who carried over our competitive juice little bit too far with our girls. Hopefully Okies DD will read and learn everyone in softball community cares for health of one another, and she is not being vilified but rather shown there are other thought process showing good sportsmanship.

Prayers and thoughts to both girls in recovery, physically and emotionally.

Thanks my dd has accepted responsibilty for her actions .Watching a good team play a great team is allways fun to watch and my right. The actions by Adults as Coach's are covered are covered under a code of conduct, they will be held reponsible for there actions,I will not repond to any other comments on the subject. It has been unfortunate fo everyone involved, and will continue outside this realm.

The real question is have you accepted your responsibility for yours?

This reads like something out of the Cobra Kai Dojo.

I'm sure every coach has taught their boys/girls to slide into second to try and break up a DP. What is NEVER taught (by an ethical coach/parent) is to slide into someone and purposely causing harm. This is just absolute bush league softball at this highest level. To think it actually gets worse to where the player stood over the girl and pumped her chest in an obvious celebration to her actions is appalling.

It's such a ridiculous scenario that I actually give the child a pass and put the blame squarely on her parents. A coach can only do so much to curve a kids attitude but the heavy lifting must be done at home. This type of action doesn't just all of a sudden happen and it appears its been condoned. From what I read in this thread it has happened on other occassions as well. I realize not everything written is the truth but it is my choice to believe what I want.

Props to the organization that booted this family off of their team and prayers from me for both families involved.

I'm not with either team but saw the play. Necessary slide into 2nd given the play. It was a hard slide that I wouldn't have suggested carried hurtful intent except for the in-your-face-taunt by the base runner when the play was over. I thought that closing action was both telling and disturbing.

I am deeply saddened for the injury to the second baseman. The base runner is also a child. I don't know her or her parents. But I hope an important life lesson is learned by this bad experience.

Best thing you could have done OkieDAD is keep as quiet as possible & at least appear to be sorry! No doubt your daughter was trying to cause pain! I'm sure a broken leg was not in the plans, but that is the result. Your past comments both public & private make this clear. You are a bad guy! I know in the future I would not allow my daughter to be on the same field as your daughter. You should be driven from this game! I'm sure someone will pick you up! It's a mistake we all make to often in this game. It's all very sad! Don't want to hear how the child should not be punished for what a parent does! Rich Otte

I witnessed this incident firsthand and will describe what I saw. The Emeralds player in question was on 1[SUP]st[/SUP] base when a ground ball was hit through the left side of the infield. Avrey positioned herself to take the throw from the left fielder (throw was coming from near foul territory) behind 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] base and attempted to put on a tag. The baserunner had already completed her slide when she lifted her leg and kicked. It was obvious to everyone who witnessed the play that the injury to Avrey was serious so any speculation that the baserunner did not realize she was injured is absurd.

I agree with others who believe this play was NOT accidental. First, the severity of the break to Avrey's leg is not the result of incidental contact. Secondly, the baserunner did not generate enough speed while running to create the force that would have been required to break Avrey's leg from a slide alone. Finally, if it were truly an accident, the baserunner would have been as concerned and as devastated as every other player, parent and coach who witnessed the play was. She would have been upset, worried and truly concerned for Avrey's well-being. Instead, she taunted her just as she taunted one of Avrey's teammates earlier in the game.

Best wishes to #22 for a speedy recovery........we can't wait to see her back on the field!

Agree that this is all very sad for sure, and I feel badly for both young ladies for different reasons. I was not there and didn't see what happened, but I can only imagine how I would feel and what I might say if my DD was seriously injured on the field and someone appeared to be celebrating. There's no way for anyone to know for sure why it happened, but I hope it at least makes some parents take pause that they are taking this way too seriously and spoiling it for the kids, or worse yet sending them the wrong messages about competition and sportsmanship.

Coming back from something as severe as a broken leg, is a hard thing to do. But those 12u players sure are strong, and getting stronger every time they step on that field. Prayers to Avrey and her family for a speedy recovery!! Hope to see her back on the field next year!

I was waiting for someone to mention lawyers.
I am one (20 years, highest rating ((*not* looking for business! just willing to give free advice)). If you have any questions, PM me. I have not seen anything at this point on this forum that you have done that you should be concerned about from a legal standpoint.

Prayers to your daughter for a speedy recovery physically and emotionally.

Just got threatened with Legal action..... Any Lawyers out there?? Last I checked, I was the one with medical bills and a dd with a Broken Leg. I never asked for people to post, I asked for PMs and Phone calls.

Jeff

Jeff ... let us know if suit is filed. I will make a donation to your legal fund!

I was not there ... having two DD's who know the risks of the game and play their asses off every play of the game, I'm not sure I would be able to restrain myself if one of my daughters was taken out then taunted. Especially if any of the history mentioned by other witnesses is true. Kudos to you for staying out of jail.

Prayers go out to your daughter for a quick and full recovery.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help!

even if half of the bad stuff is true... still sick.

If you have ASA insurance, you'll be in pretty good shape. Pay the deductible and then the fallout should be minimal if used in conjunction with your regular medical insurance as I understand it. Best of luck on her recovery.

Like Les mentioned.

Since this was an ASA event requiring ASA Bollinger insurance the injured player should have coverage with a $250 deductable that is what ours is.

The head coach or team administrator hopefully has already notified their ASA director and the proper paperwork filed..This along with any family plan as a secondary should keep medical cost down a ton...
