In a HS last week we had a player batting in 1st inning , it was our 3 hole hiter , she hits above 500 , all district , all state type player . Opposing coach hollers at his pitcher " just throw it over , she can't hit you " player hits a liner to LC for solid single . bush ?

We go on to put up 5 in the top of one , so we are up 5-0 , bottom of 1st inning. the 1st two kids get out and their 3 hole hitter comes up and goes down the 3rd base line to the third base coach and meets her half way , they procede to do 2-3 high fives , 2-3 low fives , 2-3 side ways fives and a dipsy do or two . then heads towards the plate to hit . I hollered at our pitcher " lets see if they celebrate after she hits " she pops out in the infield . was my comment bush or is putting on a show before you hit with the 3rd base coach OK these days ? The 3rd base did act ****ed and asked " what was that coach ?" I just said "nothing to you , only talking to my pitcher " MD

Talking smack is part of the game. Should be more from kids than adults that are there. But it is what it is.

Why would anyone yell that about the #3 batter in the first inning? (They're #3 for a reason.) Maybe if she whiffed in her first two at-bats... But it's still Bush League.
I'm still amazed when Louuuuuise tells me what players say to the other team during games. And we're talking college now. But to have coaches do it is juvenile.

Just let your play do the talking. If you have to say anything, try "nice hit", etc... It's what boys do. (Totally unrealistic with 20 girls involved, I know.)

Coaches need to stay far away from saying things that affect the play of opposing players. Say all you want to get your own players to perform. Fine. But if coaches want to talk smack, they should join adult softball leagues. We don't need adults, especially adult males, proving they can get into the heads of 16 year old girls.

Couple of weeks ago, opposing team had bases loaded in a close game (we won). Ball is pitched, and just as our catcher receives the ball, the baserunners on first and second are dancing, jumping 10 feet off their bases and both the base coaches are SCREAMING "GET BACK GET BACK GET BACK." Obviously a called play, trying to see if our catcher would try throwing down (she didn't), hoping to score the run from third. I found myself annoyed that a couple of adult males were trying to actively deceive a bunch of teenage girls in order to try to get a win.

Smack talk amongst players is always going to be there, it makes the game fun. Seems to me though if the other teams is up by 5 in the 1st inning, the coach should be worrying about more important things than doing dances with the batters and jawing the other team. Maybe they should put more time into practicing softball fundamentals and less into practicing their dances. The high five thing sounds pretty rediculous to me.

Yeah if I ever say anything or about the opposing kids or coaches its usually in silence. Sportsmanship has become a lost art these days and I personally only congratulate the other team for good plays, never rub it in or say anything negative at opposing team....so all the way around I would say bush league. But it does sound like this was one of those teams that would annoy the **** out of me...work harder at coming up with ways to belittle others or distract them instead of learning how to play the game...that is just goofy stuff for a 3rd base coach to do in a game...

well I am kinda close to our 3 hole hitter , LOL ........ there actually is a longer more complex story line to this dumb HS drama , the coach that said something to our 3 hole hitter was not the female that did the hand slapping , He was the head coach, the current next door neighbor to our FORMER head coach.

FWIW I never uttered a word when the guy mouthed off ... I regret it , I shoulda told him to " not say anything about our players " or it would get ugly . We went on to win 14-0 and play them 1st round of the tourney on Sat.

All of the high 5'ing before the at bat is a bit ridiculous at any time, let alone when you're down 5-0 in the first. While what you said was probably "bush", I can't blame you and might have been tempted to say the same thing ... I at least would have been thinking about it! It's obvious though that both your #3 hitter and the team did most of their talking with their play, and that's where it should be done ... and not by the adults coaching or watching ...

Thats why i never say anything even remotely negative about an opponents players. I prefer just to set in the dug out and throw dirt clods at their corner players. And then blame it on blue

Lol Tim ... I have to admit, it's hard sometimes not to say anything when people say stupid/bush things. I will admit that I have said things a couple of times over the years to the opposing coach but almost always regretted it later. I am pretty sure if I had been sitting in the crowd when #3 got the hit after the coach said she couldn't, that I would have said something like "I guess she CAN hit" ...

:lmao:

I agree - as a parent I really don't like the "loud" coaches who sometimes slip in a dig or three.... but I may just yell "Oh yeah - she CAN hit" Nice suggestion Jeff!!!!

Of course, most of the time I'm sitting in the outfield these days, a lot safer!

By Definition, Bushleague refers to "not belonging in the Major League, Amateurish, unprofessional" Therefore both of you are guilty. That said, I think the opposing coach was either trying to give his pitcher some inspiration that you would typically hear in u12 rec, or truly believed your #3 hole hitter was that bad. We know the answer to that one.
As far as the 3rd base antics go, perhaps the kid just likes to slap skin. As a coach, being up 5 I would find it more amusing than anything else. If I were down five, I would not be amused... SCOREBOARD is the ultimate equalizer.

You responded in 3 minutes!

I think he has at least two part-time jobs ... one is being a hitting coach, and the other is putting us pitching dads in their rightful places!

A good answer for coaches who talk smack: Hit, Field, Throw: And Run them out of the stadium! Pedal to the metal and do not look back! CHeck out the story of Billy Sims. In college he looked back and let a trailing runner catch up to not embarrass him. The coach said never again, the next time that runner gets on a line with you, he should unequivocally know you own him.... He cannot beat you, no way. Same here, coach talks smack: Own them!

In this situation, the other coaches are obviously idiots and they are truly bush. However, your comment was pointing to a particular member of the opposing team, which is also kinda bush since they are kids and you are an adult. The umpire should have taken care of the situation down the 3rd base line. As adults, we should never audibly point our smart-a$$ comments to the opposing kids IMO. I think you just let these jerk-a$$es get to you.

I agree , answering stupid with more stupid was wrong. should have taken the high road but it's tough. I'm contemplating talking to the opposing staff before the tourney game this sat and telling them I was out of line but I never want to hear any comments about our players come from them either.
