The rules in question:
6.5) Participating in Non-Interscholastic Programs Outside the Interscholastic Season ? Team Sports ?

A member of an interscholastic squad in a team sport sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing
board may participate in non-interscholastic contests, try-outs, training or practices prior to, and after, the
school?s interscholastic season under the following conditions:

a) The number of interscholastic squad members from the same school on the
non-inter-scholastic squad is limited to a maximum of 50% of the members of a team as defined in

the playing rules of the sport. From June 1 through July 31 (in the sports of baseball and

softball, the period is the Friday before Memorial Day-May 25 in 2012-through July 31)
this restriction is not in effect, provided the squad members have concluded their school
season. The 50% limitation is defined as follows for all OHSAA recognized team sports.

50% Limitation on Sport

Number of squad members

Baseball 4

Basketball 2

Field Hockey 5

Football 5

****** 5

Softball 4

Volleyball 3

6.9) Members of the Interscholastic Coaching Staff ? Team Sports ?

In non-interscholastic participation (contests, tryouts, training and practices) in team sports, members of the
school?s interscholastic coaching staff may coach interscholastic squad members from the
school district where employed for a maximum of 10 days from June 1 to July 31. The 10-day limitation
applies to the entire coaching staff. Each individual coach is not entitled to 10 different days for coaching.

Note:
The Board of Directors may further limit the number of contact days during this period
as specified in the specific sports regulations.

EXCEPTION 1: The paid or unpaid interscholastic coach employed by a Board of Education
or other governing board may coach interscholastic squad members from the school district
where the coach is employed as coach without limitation from June 1 through July 31 if the
50% limitation is observed. The 50% limitation is defined as a maximum of 50% of the members
of a team as defined in the playing rules of the sport.

Please note that for ten days from June 1 through July 31 there is no restriction even with high school coaches involved.

Is it safe to assume that this applies to middle school as well?

So, let me get this straight? If HS Coach is NOT involved, 5 or more can be on same Travel Team practicing/playing now? Only restriction is Feb - May when No player can be involved with Travel Team?

No the restriction of 4 or less is from August 1st through October 31st period for girls from the same school that played in the current year season. 5 or more can play together from November 1st until 1st high school practice as long as the high school coach is not coaching.

Incorrect Don... Bear put it all on page 1 of thread. If you play with more than 4 from same school now, you are in violation unless indoors.

4.7) Participation in indoor fast pitch softball is not a violation of OHSAA non-interscholastic Sports Regulation 4.5 if played indoors from November 1 through
February 1, for student-athletes.

4.5 refers to intramural sports.

To summarize, for outdoor softball from June 1 through July 31 there is no restriction if none of the coaches coach the girls in HS, if a HS coach is involved , or outside of the June/July time frame then the limit is 4. If a coaching staff has contact June 1 to July 31 the entire staff is limited to a total of 10 days of contact.

Indoor softball is also limited to 4 unless it is during the time frame of November 1 through February 1 (need to verify the dates every year as they could change). Although not explicitly stated, I believe indoor may also be played, if desired, during the June 1 to July 31 time frame.

For both, girls may not participate with their school team and an outside team during the school season (generally defined to start on the first day scrimmages are permitted and ending on the day after the end of the HS state tournament , but you need to check the regulations each year to be sure).

I had believed that the 4 on a team rule applies to high school players who gain elibility when they start high school - Thus the OHSAA Rules. A seventh or eighth grader does not all under high school rules until start of freshman season. Am I incorrect on this?

I just found the answer to my question above...........
A non-interscholastic program is defined as an organization composed of playersin grades 7-12 either in or outside of school in which the primary purpose is to competein contests no matter whether admission is charged, fees or expenses are collected, or
whether or not a coach is present, and regardless of whether instruction is given

I learned something new this past month from OHSAA Director for softball. Can have 4 girls in 8th grade & 4 in 9th on same team, as it is different schools. But if girl played on school sponsored junior high team - she counts now as a freshman towards high school total. I was thinking they would not count - but got in writing I was wrong.....lol

Only 4 on team now and no HS coach involvement. During May 25 - July 31 period there can be unlimited from same HS if the HS coaches are not involved. If HS caoches are involved during that time then only 10 days are allowed.
