Eligibility Question

There was a rostering question earlier here that got me worried. So here it is as simple as I can ask it.

Can a player who is going to play this summer season for Team A, play as a fill in for team B, on a weekend that Team A is off?

Team A is a 14U team playing ASA and NSA tournaments.

Team B is a 12U team playing UP at 14U for tournament and also plays mostly an ASA travel schedule.

Some of the sanctions are very soft with their roster rules and enforcement. USSSA you could probably get away with everything up to rostering the same player on two teams that are playing each other and having her pitch and bat for both :).

ASA is on the other end of the spectrum. You can be on two ASA rosters but once you play in an NQ (including ASA State) your locked to that team and even if your season ends in June your ASA post season pick up elligibility is dictated by what level you got frozen at.

I don't know much about NSA but I can tell you that playing on Team B which only has an ASA roster has no impact on playing on Team A's NSA roster because the two orgs don't recognize each other similar to playing AAU basketball at 18U wouldn't exclude you from playing 12U ASA. However playing on Team B can have an effect on the team A's ASA roster elligibility as stated above.

For ASA issues, the questions are: 1) has the player already played in Championship Play as a roster player; and 2) is the tournament in which she is attempting to play a Championship Play tourney? (Championship Play is any tournament that can have the effect of qualifying the team for a higher level of play; in our geographical area, it means Eastern National qualifiers and qualifiers for USA/ASA). If the answer to both questions is "no", then the player is safe being a guest. If the answer to either question is yes, there are significant issues. A player who has already played in Championship Play is frozen to that team's roster and can't be an "Additional Player" for another ASA team. A player who is eligible as an "Additional Player" and who plays as one in a Championship Play tournament becomes frozen to the roster of the team playing in that tournament.

All that said, there are tons of situations in which players participate even though they are ineligible, especially because attention to rosters in Eastern National qualifiers has been spotty at best.

But if there is a team/person out there watching closely who wants to raise the issue with the ASA, significant penalties can come into play, including suspensions and disqualifications of players and teams.

We've stopped asking for guest stints from players on a regular ASA roster, precisely because of these issues.
