Are there any rules regarding junior high girls attending open gym with the high school girls through the winter?

Also, are there any rules against junior high girls attending high school tryouts up until cuts are made and a team is determined?

Need help with this.

I'm coming from where my oldest's hs coach told me concenring my youngest. She was practicing and even played in a game (not OSHAA sanctioned). He told me if she continued, it would ruin her eligibility. We stopped immediately.

There was a thread about this last year, believe it can cost them a year of eligibility....

I'm not really worried about open gym in winter, I'm pretty clear on that, but I'm not sure about going to tryouts and reporting Monday with pitcher's and catchers.

Any clarification on this would be appreciated. I was told by the coach that she has to stop once final cuts are made an the team is determined. Once that happens it becomes practice and she can no longer participate in that.

I just want to confirm that this is the case.

Junior high kids are never permitted to practice with high school kids. You can view the bylaws at www.ohsaa.org. It is explained in the bylaws....I don't have time right now to look up which section it is in.

So what your saying is a 7th or 8th grader whose school does not offer fastpitch can never practice with a high school team for fun ?

I was told by our AD that: My dd could not participate in a official "scheduled" team practice due to insurance issues, but she could work with individuals prior to and after the "scheduled" practice time.

That is correct. Unless they have updated the rules the last two years. I was AD and high school softball coach 3 years ago and I called and asked about that exact scenario.

I think this is true, they can never "practice" with the high school team or participate in a game, scrimmage, as a starter or a sub.............. I guess the question is, it it really a practice before the team is picked?

Rule 33.3 of the general rules ( no they cann't practice with HS team)

I was always under the impression that at an open gym you could not limit it to a select group,it always had to be open to anyone in the school system. Rule 7.1.2

There's nothing in the bylaws regarding this. Again, what is the definition of "practice"?

OHSAA General Rules:

permitted by specific sports regulations. Exceptions : baseball, basketball, softball,
volleyball, tennis. (See specific sport regulations.)
33.2) Sports Season Waiver ? Schools, leagues or conferences may adjust seasons to accommodate
school teams because of the lack of availability of physical facilities or personnel. Proposed
changes in seasons shall be submitted in writing to the Commissioner and include the
proposed dates of the 7th & 8th grade season not to exceed the length of the interscholastic
season for the sport concerned. All other regulations regarding contest limitations, required
practice time and coaching requirements shall be followed.
33.3) 7th & 8th grade students may not practice with, participate on the same team with or compete
against 9th through 12th grade students.

33.4) Students below the 7th grade may not practice with or participate with 7th through 12th
grade students.
33.5) It is strongly recommended that the coaches of 7th & 8th grade sports attend the
OHSAA rules interpretation meetings for the sports they are coaching.

Why push the issue? Open gyms are fine but once Feb. 21st arrives where is the risk/reward benefit for continuing ? It is against the rules for a Jr. High athlete to participate with the HS athlete.

Open gym is open gym anyone can attend. Bill is correct when it comes to practice , when the softball seasons starts. Pitchers and Catchers this Monday, when coaches can attend and instruct. The sticky areas are Freshman are not high school players to the first scrimmage -game.

Jr. High is perfectly fine attending "open gyms" in fact they have to be open to anyone that wants to attend.

But coming to and participating in HS practice is a whole different story. Once pitchers and catchers start on monday they cannot practice together, but they can practice at the same time, in the same area. So you could have Jr. High kids in the gym with HS kids, but they couldn't be throwing with one another, or taking grounders in the same groups...etc. "You got to keep'em seperated!!!"

Thanks Shayne! I was ready to edit my post to that fact. Many facilities have seperated areas. The cages and hitting could be in a totally different area and open , while coaches are coaching in a totally different part of the building.

Thanks everyone, that clears it up. "PRACTICE" starts Monday, say no more. DD can't attend. I called the HS AD and he agrees as well.
