Here's the situation. Pop up to first, first basemen going after ball. Batter hits the first basemen trying to catch the ball. First basemen missed the ball. Probably should of caught the ball. Umpire ruled the the contact was incidental and the batter was safe.

Is there such a thing as incidental contact?

Was this ruling correct?

Thanks

Not the ruling that was called!

The only time you would not have interference on a batted ball where an offensive player contacts a defender making an intitial play on the ball, is a ground ball over foul territory.

Example....B2 hits a ground ball down the 3rd base line. R1 on third at time of pitch, breaks for home on contact. F5 moves to her right into foul territory and contacts R1 before touching the ball in foul territory. Foul ball! No chance of an out.

The play was in fair territory, the umpire said the batter barely hit the first basemen. ?So the contact was incidental.

Bretman>. Got to watch some of the 16U games you were handling. Pitching problems are mainly in the younger ages, that I'm seeing. Hopefully someone corrects them . I'm seeing more lifting of the plant foor off the rubber after taking the sign and then replanting the plant foot before pitching. I'm seeing it more this year than in the past. They rock off and then back, so it could be the way someone is teaching them, but they rock to far forward and break contact with the rubber.
