As athletic budgets continue to get tighter, it seems to me volunteer parent/coaches are going to have to be relied upon. ?When our district ADs and coaches met not long ago to try to figure out where to save money, there weren't any ideas left on the table. ?You have to pay umpires and you have to buy balls. ?The only significant expense left to cut was coaching.

So I suggested we eliminate pay for all coaches and just hire parent volunteers to coach the high school teams if all the coaches quit. ?No one took me seriously, but I was being serious. ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Coaches salaries do not come out the athletic departments budget, so that shouldn't affect sports programs. They should come out of the same budget that pays teachers and administrative salaries. I can understand if cuts have to be made from the schools budget, this could affect coaches.

Lady Knights, that might be the case, I'm not sure. Either way, the money is coming from the taxpayers. What would keep a district from eliminating coaches' salaries and then apportioning the saved money to athletic budgets? Or is that something the school districts bargain away to the union?
