I saw them at the Lasers tourney and the fall Best of the Best....

and how did they place? Looks like 25th @ States and 0-2 in bracket play @ Lasers.

Sorry - but you know as well as anyone that you have to win not just show up.

For those that didn't get in that are doubting the process does your team have a track record of doing high end tournaments? Do you have a track record of putting girls into colleges on scholarship moneys? How many girls do you have now that have realistic shots at playing in college?

Anyone can set up a schedule to have a winning record, but its a showcase, our girls are getting into colleges and play a heavy schedule and are talented. Not concerned with winning percentage, but rather getting them in front of coaches.

Also, if you didn't get in our their other tournaments in the area, that are close that weekend, that you could contact coaches and they could still make it to another facility with relative ease.

Good points! As with any tournament that turns teams away, there are going to be unhappy people. My team did not get in and I am trying to look at it as spilled milk.

Last year we did not get in and played the other tourney in Columbus. With the rain it was hard for college coaches to leave Stingrays. I think the best bet is to travel out of state that weekend near an area where some of your players want to attend college.

Nice to see you putting in your research. The team in question has more new players than old. Their fall record was impressive and there is no doubt they will be a tough team. The reason for an application process is to lay this all out for the committee. The rest is outside of the team's control and is a part of growing from a first year team to a second year team.

We know one team is a Hawks team, what team do you represent? Maybe we can get the two teams together and you can show them what elite looks like? Put your "elite" pinks on the line so to speak!

If your team is an 'elite' 'showcase' team, there will be tournaments in other states that will welcome you. We didn't make Stingrays last year and went to the Buckeye Showdown with plenty of college coaches watching a number of our games. The exposure is there, but it won't come to you unless you put the work in. Coaches/Directors need to do their homework and always have back up plans...luckily, ours do and did!

I am sure the selection process is not easy, and that much has to be based on the reputation of the various organizations. Let's face it ... it's a bit of the chicken and the egg thing here ... organizations with top reputations are going to get into these top-flight tournaments, while others will not making it increasingly difficult for them to get in the following year as well since they didn't play in them the year before. The only thing they can do is go out and put together the best schedule they can, and make sure they are teaching the skills and helping with the processes for their girls to play at the next level. Being a 16-U coach, I'd like to see there be more opportunities to truly showcase more girls at this age level, but I recognize that we as coaches and parents and athletes need to be ones to do the hard work to make this happen, and not count on being selected for these events.

If you didn't get into this tournament, no big deal. The Buckeye Showdown is a great tournament the same weekend at Berliner. There are lots of tough softball teams from around Ohio plus around the surrounding states as well and plenty of college coaches there too. We played teams from Indianapolis, St. Louis, Michigan, Tennessee, and New York last year at 16U. Bill Beckham runs a great tournament(s) as well and I've known him for many years as I have been coaching for over 15 years. One thing about his tournaments, he doesn't turn away any good teams. My team is loaded with girls that are going to play in college so we want to play the toughest schedule that we can.

What about winners of the Gapps,Stingrays,Lasers,Buckeye Showdown and any other showcases play a tourney at the end of the year. That would be a showcase of some of the best. I have taken teams to several showcase tourneys and had a great time at all, but to see the best of the best would be fun. I would be a huge fan of that. I agree with most of the comments about the Stingrays being a fundraiser and others knowing showcases are for the older girls. Its all about FUN, if your DD is committed and you as a parent are committed they will find a college to play for if they have any talent and most of all GRADES.

In my opinion; I think having both tournaments the same weekend, (in close proximity) is an excellent opportunity for players and college coaches. As coaches, we need to make sure the necessary contacts are made with the college coaches that will be in the area the weekend of these two tournaments. If there is interest in a player, a good observation can be made with minimal travel time. I have not seen a complete list of college coaches attending either tournament yet, but plan to contact them as soon as I have the list. Both tournaments are highly competitive and will have college observation. We just have to do our homework, "who is in town".

I attended a lot of the top tournaments last spring/summer and only saw Ohio Hawks 16U @ Findlay. How did you all do there and what other "tough" schedule tournaments did you place at in 2009?

If you don't think Stingrays only accepts the top teams @ 16/18U then I'm not sure you've seen a top knotch tournament in Ohio.

knotch ?? LOL, ive gotten over 5-6 calls today telling me of some blowhole on OFC interested in my team. As for not seeing us, maybe you werent at the right top "knotch" tournies ;&

I just love secret admirers.....:)

Wow i guess its kinda like a snowstorm. A line must be drawn somewhere. I understand each side. I do wish a small playoff system could be intoduced. That way we actually get the deserving teams in the spotlight versus some that maybe ridding the shirtails of prior teams and organizations of the past. Divide the state into fourths play some round robbins and let the cards fall where the may. Just a thought.

HUH???? Sounds like trolling for college coaches.

Don't your girls email the coaches of the colleges in which they have an interest? A college coach isn't going to come watch a team if they don't have any info on any of the girls.

As a travel coach, you should have a list of colleges from each of your players that they are interested in. You would then send the college coaches an email letting them know what tournaments that you are going to be attending. You can also send them a team profile sheet then they know some girls from your team.

True this.........

This thread is really getting interesting.

With 51 teams and 32 spots there are going to be some disappointed people. Looking at the list, there a maybe a half dozen that don't belong, and another ten or so that no doubt should be in there. Everyone else is up in the air. No shame then in being turned down; they make a decision and you go from there

Yes some, (not all) of my players have contact with colleges they would like to attend. As for sending College coaches tournament information for my players; that was my exact point! Who will be in the area during the tournaments so I can do my part as a coach? Just think it's a great opportunity for coaches and players that both of these tournaments are near each other and the same weekend.

Huh???? The players need to be emailing the college coaches they are interested in!! The travel coaches definitely help by getting the teams where the college coaches are, but it is the player the college coach needs to hear from regularly....!!
