Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Pitching speed?

Just wondering what is the average pitching speed in 10U?

Depends on who is holding the gun. If it's the pitcher's mom or dad, their answer will be 5-7mph over reality. I'll put myself out there to be run over by the OFC'ers though and say, "If she is throwing in the 40s with good control then I'd say she's doing just fine." There will be others faster but many many others slower than that.

The top ranked teams always seem to have one throwing 45-48..

TR ... agreed ... anything consistenly in the 40's with control is probably pretty good for 10-U's. And add some pitching coaches to your list of people who are notorious for inflating the number ... I actually would go so far as saying that some moms and dads inflate the number because the pitching coach told them it was higher ... I guess it's good for their business? Not saying most do it ... but I know several who at least used to ... when the girls came to tryouts, I would ask who their pitching coach was and what they were told their speed was, and let's just say that patterns emerged! Oh yeah, they also threw 9 pitches that pretty much all looked the same too ...

Helped with our Org's 10U tryouts last fall and evaluated a 9U that claimed to have 7 pitches. The only discernable one from the other 6 was her changeup.

With no offense to the original poster, as I am sure he is just trying obtain information and learn more. But this comes up every season and usually starts a huge he said she saw at this place or that sort of discussion. Just a warning for anyone who has not seen this happen before.

True that. I knew I was in trouble when I was looking at her elbow pointing at the sky after she released her drop-curve. LOL

I do feel this is an interesting topic (speed). Are the girls throwing harder today on average, than they were 10 years ago? 20 years ago?

my DD had 7 pitches when she was 10u. They were hit the backstop rise, hit the dirt drop, hit the batter screw and curve. Slow, slower and down the middle fastball.
